LED
BASED HOME LIGHTING
|
|
LED lights powered by solar power provide very ideal
source with very low power consumption and long
life. According to our estimate a 50 hamlet village
can be provided with 12hrs lighting a day with just
1 Lakh Rs. investment whereas power lines from
distant hub cost nothing less than 20 Lakhs and need
maintenance and community has to pay for it and then
there are line losses and all sorts of things
associated with grid power. Thrive has powered
around 12 tribal hamlets and 7 rural institutes with
LED lights. A small village costs 60000 and an
institute 20,000. This innovation is now ready for
large-scale dissemination in around 1000 remote
villages of AP, Orissa, Chattisgarh. President of
India commended thrive efforts on LED lighting and
called for large scale implementation

SOLAR
POWERED INTERNET KIOSK
|
|
|
To meet the power problems and continuous internet
requirements in the rural and remote areas THRIVE
has developed Solar powered GPRS/EDGE technology
based laptop that runs for around 40 hrs on a single
day solar charge. There is no need for grid power
to run the kiosk and use around 12 batteries to run
the kiosk in the day time. GPRS based internet is
stable and 24 hrs on line and costs less than a
rupee for an hour.

SOLAR
POWERED DTH TELEVISION FOR REMOTE AREAS
|
|
|
To bring the rural and interior communities to the
mainstream and provide them acces to the education
and communication and entertainment THRIVE has
developed and tested a TV that works on DTH and on
solar power. The TV system costs around Rs. 50,000
and works for 8 to 10 hrs a day.

WEATHER
MONITORING AND FORECASTING
|
|
Weather
is a local phenomenon and high quality weather
monitoring instruments that does not cost more than
Rs. 25000 (Davis weather stations) can be used to
accurately forecast the whether situation for a 20
km radius and can be communicated to the farmers
through radio transmission. It is in our experience
that the general weather forecasts for entire state
or region spanning over hundreds of sq. Kms are of
no use to individual farmers when they want to
decide to seed, spray pesticide or apply water and
for all agriculture purposes.
Thrive has procured DAVIS weather stations and has
been accurately recording all weather data and
trying to disseminate it to the farmers. After the
FM radio commences the operations this process
becomes the easiest and most useful to the farmers.
THRIVE in association with WWF and others is now
promoting the use of digital rain gauge and tem.
monitor for every mandal which costs Rs.2000 but
gives accurate information for use in district and
state level aggregation.

Discontinued
Projects
Though this projects are discontinued in THRIVE
area, they seem to have lot of need in interior
areas like Koraput, Malkangiri and some parts of
Rayagada. Hoping to implement them in that parts of
the Orissa with the help of good NGOs. |

LOW
POWER FM COMMUNITY RADIO
(Discontinued) |
|
Low
cost FM radio (Average transmitter costs 50000 Rs.
and popularly called suite case radios) can be used
to broadcast, weather forecast, agriculture prices
info, pest situation, health camps info, missing
cattle info, even invitations for marriages and many
otherwise which are otherwise not possible to be
communicated to focused groups without any
expenditure.
Thrive has assembled a simple 5 WATT FM radio
station for as low as Rs. 3000 and now waiting for
the permission to start farmers radio. In the
present scenario, unfortunately the licensing is not
being given in the rural areas. Only in the urban
areas, they are releasing the licensing for a very
hefty fee, which finally is leading into a form of
CINEMA based cheap entertainment in the metros.
So
the most powerful is being monopolized and engaged
for a kind of unproductive entertainment.

VILLAGE
COMMUNICATION THROUGH LONG-RANGE CORDLESS
(Discontinued) |
|
One can
connect each remote in accessible village for Rs.
8000 with more reliable wireless station. This
devise is same as a cordless phone but with more
power and a roof top antenna to send the signal to
the distant handset located miles away. With just
one landline one can use as many as 99 handsets and
they become a sort of wireless EPABX Handsets can be
charged with a small solar panel the size of a
notebook.
This devise is far cheaper and simpler than laying
expensive copper cables for miles together and to
face the hell of maintenance associated with it. In
any case one can not invest Rs. 10 Lakhs or more to
connect a small hamlet which may need just one or
two phone again to receive calls from the migrant
relatives in the city.
Again, these devises are data enabled which means
internet can be accessed on them connected to any
computer in any of the remote villages. THRIVE has
tested the phones and used them in two tribal
villages which are 40 KM away from the near by
telephone line. But this technology needs government
of India licensing of wireless frequency which we
feel will never be given.

VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE
(Discontinued) |
|
Thrive at present has erected
a wind turbine in collaboration with MS AITKIN
consultants. This wind turbine works for an average
of 5 to 8 hours day and pumps water that is
equivalent to 1-2-horse power from any depths. The
cost of the wind turbine is around Rs. 60000 and
will continue to work for years as there are no
complicated gears, rudders and other mechanism
generally associated with the fan based wind
turbines. But, at present the turbine is pumping
very less water and THRIVE is studying the pattern
of wind flow and its seasonal performance over one
full year.
This project has been discontinued, and the existing
setup is being used for simple power generation.
