Lighting Up The Bottom of
The Pyramid
International
development organizations like the World Bank, the IFC, the UN,
and
various foundations have been strongly advocating the use LED
based lighting to
help 'light up the bottom of pyramid' (which they define as
being the poor in Africa
and Asia). These agencies believe there is a 40 billion US$ (www.lightingafrica.org)
market for the lighting products in Asia and Africa in the
next 10 years, which is being driven by the poor and lower
middle class in Africa
and Asia requiring reliable light.
There is a tremendous opportunity for the national governments
of countries such as
India to encourage LED lighting to benefit the poor and to save
the 4 billion US$ per annum they are subsiding in kerosene. This
LED lighting if implemented will
reduce the pilferages of the kerosene to the black market, which
is getting
adulterated in the petrol causing enormous environmental damages
and health issues
in urban and rural areas. The Government of India is also
proposing to launch
KUTIR JYOTI ('home light for small cottages') scheme where in
they would like to
subsidise one light for family.
