Background Information
THRIVE (www.thrive.in),
was set up as an NGO established under the Indian
Societies Act in 2001 by its current President, Dr Ranganayakulu
(Ranga) to address
the health needs of tribal communities. THRIVE is involved in a
range of projects
but has also worked over the last five years to develop its
uniquely designed LED
home light (as well as the processes and systems required for
the installation and
maintenance) for poor people across Asia and Africa. The product
is of high quality
and won the World Bank and United Nations award for technology
innovation in
May 2006, and there is now a huge demand for the light.
THRIVE has now successfully sold almost 20,000 lights in 5
different countries and
in 7 states of India. There is the potential of 100 million home
lights in India alone
in the next 5 years (Planning Commission Government of India
Report). There are
also numerous enquiries coming from Africa, where there is a
potential of 250
million home lights in the next 5 years. THRIVE's work to date
has seen it develop
strong relationships with many NGOs, UN agencies and local
governments and is
well placed to supply into these markets.
